Dr. Sunny Shin is the Director of Innovation in Child and Family Wellness Research. He is also a Professor in the VCU School of Social Work and an Associate Professor in the VCU School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. His research program advances social justice through innovative, community-engaged scholarship that transforms how we understand and address childhood adversity. Shin's research currently focuses on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), youth mental and behavioral health, prevention science, and child welfare. His work centers on the development and implementation of trauma-informed preventive interventions for children, families, and professionals, with a strong emphasis on racial and ethnic minority populations. His research has advanced social work practices and developed innovative interventions to improve the wellbeing of children and families, particularly those from marginalized communities.
