Virginia School Mental Health Initiative
This project takes a systems-level approach to student mental health by leveraging the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework, a dynamic model that offers tailored academic, behavioral, and social-emotional interventions based on individual student needs. In response to the growing demand for scalable mental health solutions in schools, our research-practice partnership aims to strengthen MTSS implementation across Virginia. Through district-wide surveys and collaboration with an advisory council of diverse PK-12 educators, we are developing a responsive, school-based mental health framework, complete with validated fidelity tools. This initiative enhances schools' capacity to meet students' evolving mental health challenges—particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic—by providing a comprehensive, adaptable system that prioritizes student well-being. Rooted in our expertise with trauma-informed interventions, this work addresses the urgent need for system-wide, sustainable mental health support in educational settings.
